Contra is a contemporary New York cuisine, which offers ambitious menu. Dishes are cooked mainly of local ingredients. The three-course meal cost 55 dollars at Contra. There are dishes for customers with dietary restrictions and allergies.

Two chefs create meals in the small kitchen, while the guests are waiting in a narrow dining room. The chefs are Jeremiah Stone, who used to be a sous-chef of Rino in Paris and worked for Isa (New York), and his partner in the kitchen Fabian von Hauske, who worked in pastry kitchen Jean Georges. They liked the concept of a new venue immediately. Their main goal is to create the style of cooking that New Yorkers would consider their own.

The selection of great restaurants is wide in a big, amazing city, but which of them can represent the area? What restaurant would characterize New York? There is not enough style in the restaurants as New York venues lack identity. Contra has ambitious plans not just to become the one but set the standard and be associated with New York.

Different restaurants just try to repeat successful ideas that provide guaranteed profit without bringing innovative features. These efforts do not enrich the culinary scene. It becomes secondary and Contra opposes such situation. Trying to prevent the fate of many venues, the chefs create amazing dishes at a reasonable price. However, not all visitors of the place are satisfied with selection. They want a bigger choice. At least, you can be sure that everything you can find on the menu is going to be superb.

There is a big glass wall in the restaurant that faces Orchard Street. It visually expands the interior of a long dining room. Contra features utilitarian trend that emerged in the dining scene of New York in the last decade. There are red-brick walls and concrete floor in this swanky nouveau-bunker style. Try risotto with wheat berries and fresh clams, scallop with horseradish and Brussels sprout and delicious seared monkfish. Poultry dishes are cool in Contra. They serve chicken and roast pigeon. This bistro-style restaurant is appreciated for its originality and definitely worth visiting.
