When I think of Italy I think of Santa Lucia. It is my favourite Italian restaurant in the world. I love it for the food. But some come here just to feel the presence of great artists; their photographs are covering the walls of the restaurant. It was founded in 1929, in Via Agnello by Leone Legnani, who had old Parthenopean recipes (from Naples). Among the very first clients were D’Annunzio and then Mascagni together with the legendary Russian bass Shalyapin, who was performing at La Scala. Yves Montand, Sergio Tofano, Paolo Stoppa, Eduardo De Filippo, and the most important celebrities of the show business followed, and chose ‘Santa Lucia’ as their meeting place after the show. In 1957, the new urban structure wipes out part of Via Agnello and ‘Santa Lucia’ moves to Via S. Pietro all’Orto, with its kitchen, tables, all furniture and even the original sign. And the show business tradition goes on: Belafonte, Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Placido Domingo, Gassman, Mastroianni, Sordi, Maria Callas, Delon, visit the restaurant. This historic Milanese restaurant captured the 1950’s momentum, white jacketed friendly waiters; old chairs; southern cuisine and typical Lombardo dishes like risotto or ossobuco. Its not easy to express in a few words how delicious is The Pasta at this place; rigatoni in tomato sauce is mouth watering experience. Grilled artichokes and fried zucchini in olive oil, Sole and veal Milanese are simple, fresh and have the homemade flavour. Viva Santa Lucia!
